v Chelmsford (away) 15th October 2006

Brentwood U15s 51 Chelmsford U15s 0

Brentwood wins emphatically…

Rumour has it that the boys were told to play a rucking game against Chelmsford so, ever the great listeners, the boys started the game well with an impressive maul. It started from the kick off catch and continued to a couple of metres from the Chelmsford try line where a ruck was formed. William made a few hard yards to get nearer the try line and Luke was bundled over. A great start was completed as Adam nailed the conversion, 7-0 Brentwood.

From the restart there was more mauling. Not content with doing the forwards job hooker Matt Whaley and prop William decided they’d give being centres a bash too as they made breaks through the middle, linking nicely with each other several times before sending Charlie over in the corner to continue the good start. The conversion was missed, 12-0 Brentwood.

Brentwood were playing impressively, maybe having learnt a few lessons from previous weeks, with the forwards making ground all the time and the ball being released to the backs at good times. Despite the backs being well used it was forwards thinking they were backs that set up the third try. William again appeared in the centre (seems he’s given up on the Willy the winger dreams and now wants to be a centre ) this time with Billy, and between them they ran straight through the Chelmsford defence , setting up a ruck near the try line which enabled Chris Doble to charge over. The conversion clipped the post and missed, 17-0 Brentwood.

Things continued to get worse for Chelmsford as yet more tremendous forward work earned Brentwood a scrum 5 metres out. Chris Doble picked up from the back and on his way to the try line picked up the award for ‘Best use of the ref as a block’. The conversion missed, 22-0 Brentwood.

The next passage of play saw Jordan make a scorching break down the wing and good support from both Chris Doble and Sam Morgan saw the ball ending up being knocked on with the try line beckoning. Brentwood however was keen to amend this mistake and forced Chelmsford into conceding a penalty. Billy took it in, drawing in several Chelmsford players and then the ball was spun wide (yes it actually got to the wing!) where Adam popped up on a loop round from fly half to score in the corner. The conversion was wide, 27-0 Brentwood.

In the remaining period of the first half the forwards and backs continued making metres and passing well at such an extreme pace that it was too fast for me to keep the scribbling in my notepad legible but from what I can make out half time came not long after the 5th try with the score 27-0 to Brentwood.

Credit to Chelmsford, after Brentwood’s first half performance it probably would have been very tempting to give up completely but Chelmsford came racing out of the blocks. The ball was caught at the restart by Chelmsford and given to their speedy winger who went flying down the touchline, evading every tackle that came in and looked to be in until Roland struck again. Coming from the other side of the field at full pelt somehow Roland managed to dive and absolutely smash his man just as he reached the try line, causing him to drop the ball and the spectators to wonder how on earth he managed to do it. Chelmsford continued to battle and had a good ten minutes of play where they were probably unlucky not to get on the score sheet but Brentwood eventually regained control.

The forwards won the ball back in the Chelmsford half and it was quickly flipped wide to the backs as the counter attack was on. It reached Sam Fry who probably could have gone for glory himself but decided to make the score certain by passing to the unmarked Jake. That or he was concerned Jake might get overly emotional if he didn’t pass to him. If you ever need a pal for a girly shopping trip Jake, feel free to ask, I promise I’ll tell you if your bum looks big in those gorgeous sparkly jeans…Billy now had the kicking duties and managed to knock a conversion over, 34-0 Brentwood.

The forwards were now running rampant, breaking round the fringes all the time and some good running from William, Billy, Chris Doble and Sam Morgan saw William and Sam bundle over in the corner with Sam claiming the try. Billy proved his last kick was a fluke by missing the conversion, 39-0.

Rob, having finally managed to turn up at the right ground, caught the restart well and set off on a charging run down the pitch and managed to get the offload to Chris Doble but the next pass was just thrown slightly forward. Brentwood however nicked the scrum against the head, Chris Doble popped off the back and the supporting Jake went under the posts (whilst trying desperately not to split any ends). Billy managed the conversion from straight in front, 46-0 Brentwood.

The last try was probably the best of the game. Deep in their own 22 Brentwood decided to run the ball with Gregor, on at fly half, making a lovely break. The ball was passed to James and then to William but the move just ended up in touch. From the lineout Brentwood managed to nick the ball, which was then spread wide. Some great passes and some good looping allowed Roland to squeeze over in the corner to bring up the half century. Billy’s conversion dropped underneath, he claimed it was meant to miss as they’d already reached 50, and the final whistle was blown, 51-0 and a great performance from Brentwood.
