v Chelmsford (away) 25th March 2006

U15s 22 Chelmsford U15s 0

A win at last…

Brentwood began the game in their currently French style of play, spells of wonderful attack and spells of iffy defence. It was clear Chelmsford were up for this game and weren’t about to let Brentwood run rings around them and heading towards the end of the first half the score was still 0-0 with both Brentwood and Chelmsford probably having similar amounts of possession and territory.

The deadlock was finally broken when Brentwood began to get a bit of momentum which culminated in them being awarded a penalty around 7 metres out. After the roaring success of the cunning penalty move last week it was decided it would be used again and again came off spectacularly with Sam Morgan going over the try line. I am however told the ball was meant to go to William but he couldn’t prise it out of Sam’s hands, Sam claiming that he hadn’t scored for a while so he didn’t think William would mind if he nicked his try. Keith was again left grinning ear to ear. The conversion missed, 5-0 Brentwood.

Brentwood then had a slight lapse in concentration (there’s a surprise) and Chelmsford very nearly scored. Fortunately the situation was rectified and saw Brentwood break out. Chris Doble and Sam Morgan crashed through some Chelmsford tackles and the move eventually ended in Billy being bundled over the line, which he informs me is why he should play flanker not fly half. I told him that he was too much of a girl to be a forward. (The Billy bashing may be particularly harsh this week given Saracens moved ahead of Wasps in the table) The conversion missed. 10-0 to Brentwood and half time.

The second half started well with some nice handling and a lovely probing kick from Gregor, which set up good field position. The forwards and backs began to work well in tandem and some sleek handing left Jordan with some space to exploit. And exploit it he did. He danced through the cover tackles and a burst of pace saw him over the try line under the posts. Billy off, Chris Doble kicked the conversion, 17-0 Brentwood.

The rest of the match was a tale of rolling substitutes, 25 Brentwood boys played in all which just goes to illustrate the strength in depth and competition within the squad. Regardless of who was on the pitch and what position the boys were playing they continued to play well and press for another try. With pressure good and penalties being won when Brentwood were awarded another penalty right on the Chelmsford try line some words from a Chelmsford player made the ref decide enough was enough and he went under the posts for a penalty try. Several parents were left quite bewildered by this, penalty tries not really being awarded in youth rugby usually, and now Steve will have to add another row to his try scoring stats…Charlie, the 3rd kicker of the day, missed the conversion and the game ended 22-0. A deserved win and a good performance
