v Woodford (away) Sunday 20th January 2008

Brentwood U16s 5 Woodford U16s 28

Here’s hoping Brentwood are a Cup Team…

I’ll be honest; I’m really not sure what I’m going to write this week so bear with me…this game was definitely not Brentwood’s best, let’s put it that way. The game started with Brentwood almost immediately under pressure and a kickable penalty was conceded with only minutes on the clock. It was duly kicked, 3-0 Woodford.

This set the precedent for pretty much the rest of the game with Brentwood working their way into a vaguely promising position only to inevitably give away a penalty, lose any semblance of continuity and end up right back down in their own half. This was how Woodford’s second kickable penalty came about, it was kicked, 6-0 Woodford.

What with the penalties and Brentwood looking half asleep at times it was hardly surprising that following a long kick into their half by Woodford the ball was turned over (for a change) and Woodford scored in the corner, the conversion missed but it was still 11-0 Woodford.

Half time really couldn’t come too soon what with the Raving Touchline Parents and I’m afraid to say for one week only the Raving Touchline Reporter (I put it down to being in a foul mood already, I don’t take Wasps capitulating too well…) getting increasingly irate and the boys looking frustrated.

The second half started in a much brighter modus (look who found their thesaurus this week!) with Brentwood gaining good field position and finally winning a penalty near the try line which Billy decided to scrum. The ball was taken off the back and crashed up several times by the forwards with Rob eventually being rewarded for the collective forward effort to bestir over the touchline. I’m quite liking this thesaurus. The conversion missed, 11-5 Brentwood and perhaps they were back in the game.

Unfortunately Brentwood proceeded to concede another penalty, que surpresa as I wrote in my notes, and Woodford ripped the defence apart to score in the corner, 16-5 Woodford.

The remainder of the game was one big mess from a Brentwood point of view, another couple of penalties, another Woodford try, this time converted for 23-5 and then another to make the final score 28-5 to Woodford. Zut alors as the French would say. Take nothing away from Woodford who were by far the better team on the day and deserved the win but it was a disappointing Brentwood performance and everyone will be hoping it will be rectified for this week.

Finally, I would like to apologise for any confusion that my use of the thesaurus has caused for the forwards but desperate times called for desperate measures!
